According to the Socialist mayor of the town the programme served the interests of the teachers and the children, too. A group of parents in Tiszaföldvár claimed indignantly that their children had been ordered to attend the family May picnic organized by the Hungarian Socialist Party. The guest of the picnic was István Újhelyi, deputy chairman of the party, too. One of the parents said it was shocking that children had to participate in a party programme just as it was before the change of regime. Antal Hernek, one of the headmasters said it was rather a friendly meeting while the mayor, Attila Borza said the children had a good time. The law forbids all situations when students or teachers have to confess or deny their political creed.
Earlier Zoltán Pokorni, deputy chairman of Fidesz, former Minister of Education had been harshly criticized for a circular sent to schools asking questions concerning educational topics. András Tatai-Tóth, Socialist member of the parliamentary committee for education said then headmasters were compelled to violate the law either by answering or neglecting the circular. According to this logic the Socialist May picnic was a similar blunder when on top of it children were used as tools.
