During the Horn government in 1997 Bálint Magyar gave subsidies to schools to help disadvantaged Gipsy pupils in separate classes though the report of the ombudsman for minority problems called the effort a total failure. In 2002 Bálint Magyar took a complete turn, opposing his former policy, spending several billion forints to liquidate segregation.
In a polemic with the Hungarian Conference of Catholic Bishops Bálint Magyar called the Conference segregationist two weeks ago because the Catholic bishops criticized Magyar’s new policy of integration. At present there are 700 classes in Hungary where disadvantaged children learn separated and there are about 3000 classes where they are in majority.
