Electric power is much more expensive in Hungary than in other counries of the region. According to the data published by Eurostat in Eastern Central Europe Hungary is the second on the list of high prices. In Slovakia the price of community electric power is higher while industrial current is more expensive in Romania. The cheapest price of electricity is in Malta among members of the EU where no V.A.T. has to be paid while the most expensive country is Denmark from this respect though wages are much higher in the Scandinavian countries, of course so it means a much smaller burden for the consumers.
Márton Járosi, chairman of the Association for Energy Policy 2000 claims the cause of the high electricity prices in Hungary can be found in the privatization of the energy sector in the mid ’90-es. The big international companies have made a huge profit while the state-owned remaining part produced only losses. In Europe seven big companies own 60 pc of the energy market which seems to exclude the possibility of a free competition.
