According to János Kóka, Minister of Economy and Transport it is needless to finance certain fields of the research work of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences which do not bring real value added results for the society. The minister spoke about this in a national conference of young economists.
His views have shocked several experts. The conference took place in April 2 and Magyar Nemzet has been informed by Zsolt Bisoff, one of the lecturers there. János Kóka said: ’Those parts of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences which would not serve directly competitiveness, must be made even with the ground because they produce only dusty documents’. ’The problem with Hungarian scientists is the fact that those of them who were decisive or created something enduring, are no more alive’- he added.
Miklós Merényi, communication director of the ministry claims the quotations are not correct, he said the minister mentioned only the necessity of regrouping support for fields serving competitiveness while the second quotation sounded as ’our Nobel-prize winners are significantly limited in work by the fact most of them are dead’. Szilveszter E. Vizi, chairman of the Academy of Sciences said he would react to the minister’s words in the forthcoming days.
