While Ferenc Gyurcsány has urged a European Union budget for three years, János Veres wants a budget for seven years. Yesterday the proposal of the Prime Minister was refused in Brussels, calling it ’unsuitable’. The commissioner of EU budget planning said in a press briefing yesterday that Gyurcsány’s proposal would not benefit the new member states including Hungary because a budget for seven years could ensure a stability and a security in the sphere of subsidies.
In the case of a three-year budget – with the accession of Romania and Bulgaria – Hungary as a ’richer’ country might lose a great part of EU subsidies. Yesterday János Veres, Minister of Finance said to the Hungarian Press Agency MTI that he supported the EU budget for seven years because this might triple the sources which are now available for Hungary.
