The chairman claims that this sum is enough to cover the taxes and contributions to be paid while the employees’ salaries are not yet due. He said he decided like this after a consultation with István Szíjártó, economic manager of the Hungarian Radio, commissioner of the Endowment. ’I trust only Mr Szíjártó’, he added. The public radio issued a statement saying they want to ensure primarily the order of programmes and the financial security of the employees and external contributors but they are forced to withhold the payments due to contracted partners. ’The Hungarian Radio puts the blame of all financial damages on the Presidium of the Public Endowment’, the statement says. János Halász MP (Fidesz) said the chairman violated the law while István Újhelyi, media politician of the Hungarian Socialist Party said it was not a political question and he would not take a stand in the conflict. Iván Pető MP (Free Democrats) expressed his approval of Gellért Kis’s ’responsible action’ while András Pettkó MP (Hungarian Democratic Forum) condemned the measure while blaming both great parties for the present deadlock. The money necessary for the operation of the public radio is transferred by ORTT, the Hungarian media authority. Its head, György Kovács (Hungarian Socialist Party) said he did not find the measures of Gellért Kis either correct or justified.
