Lajos Aáry-Tamás, educational ombudsman considers initiating a general examination into tuition fees demanded by universities and colleges because he suspects it is not only the Budapest Media Institute of the University of Szeged where such fees have been taken from students illegally.
Henrik Havas, founder of the Media Institute would not comment on the case, he made an obscene remark to Magyar Nemzet. The ombudsman said the rector of the university had 30 days to accept the proposal to stop the illegal practice and reimburse the fees otherwise the students could take a legal action along with students who had had their diplomas from the institute. Béla Pukánszky, vice rector responsible for educational affairs said to Magyar Nemzet he received the ombudsman’s letter on Friday and he could not study it yet. Probably the leaders of the university will formulate their standpoint next week but no one can assess at this moment how much money will have to be paid back to the students.
A student pays about HUF 800 000 to HUF 1 million for a five-year course and in the past ten years there have been about one thousand students of the Media Institute so it is assumed by experts that the total sum of reimbursement can reach HUF 1 billion. Lawyer Barnabás Futó said the responsibility for damages affected mainly the university but it was possible that the university would shift this responsibility to Média Menedzser Ltd, the company of Henrik Havas, journalist and anchor, in contract with the University of Szeged. Several young journalists work in the Hungarian press who graduated from the Budapest Media Institute, there are three of them working for Magyar Nemzet.
