Yesterday Zoltán Illés MP (Fidesz) urged the government to declare Hungary is free from genetically modified plants and this would be maintained in the future as well. The problem has been widely discussed in the ministries, in academic circles and by environmentalists but now it will be probably a part of high politics, too. The bill is expected to be discussed in the autumn session of the parliament. The European Union has a proposition about the production of genetically modified plants but according to Zoltán Illés MP this is not compulsory. In the meantime the United States of America and several multinational companies are lobbying for the introduction of the technology in Hungary because America may not import maize to Europe without marking the product that it contains genetically modified ingredients. The introduction of the technology is supported by noted Hungarian experts, too.
