Now Imre Szekeres explains this by a ’misprint’ because he spoke about certain historical processes referring to the American historian Francis Fukuyama. Imre Szekeres said to Magyar Nemzet he had put the question whether it was the end of ’the wonderful story of the Hungarian Socialist Party’ if the goals set in 1989-90 have been reached since then. According to the politician the answer is no because after the realization of democracy and market economy and the NATO and EU membership there are new challenges like the reduction of differences between the rich and the poor, the creation of a modern economy, and the shaping of the European Union to support Hungarian interests.
Earlier Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány labelled Szekeres’s alleged words as ’a wrong and mistaken sentence’, expressing his hope it was not uttered at all. Imre Szekeres also spoke about the session of the economy policy section of the party saying that the policy of Fidesz would be a setback for the country while Fidesz claims the Socialists still discuss the problems of yesterday while it is essential for Hungary to change its course because the austerity measures and broken promises of the government impose a punishment on children, pensioners, and on young families excluded from the new housing scheme of the Socialists.
