The Independent Trade Union of Postal Workers claims that by 3000 more postmen have been dismissed than prescribed in the agreement. The Hungarian Post Company says the trade union has made a miscalculation. In the period of the change of government in 2002 there were 43 200 employees in the company and though PM Medgyessy promised a greater moral and material appreciation of their work there was an agreement to dismiss 5 000 employees. At the end of 2004 there should be 37 500 employees in the company but their number has been reduced to 34 254. In February there was a serious breakdown in the system of the Hungarian Post Company when the new letter and parcel processing centre at Budaörs (worth HUF 10 billion) failed to operate normally, causing a tremendous delay. The other trade union, the Trade Union of Postal Workers has also recognized the fact of a ’continuous lay-off” in the company, though this trade union has been in friendly relationship with the management.
