While the government is still publishing data supporting the theory of an increasing general welfare, most of the prices of products and services will rise in January. Most of the charges of services will be raised by more than the expected rate of inflation. The price of mineral gas without compensation will rise by 11,5 pc and there will be no money for the modernization of energy consumption like the renovation of heating systems. Electricity charges will rise by an expected 10 pc and taxes and duties will be also higher. Tolls and the price of medicines, railway tickets and that of bread will rise, too. This will hit hardest the senior citizens who will be given a 3,5-4 pc pension raise announced last week. A survey conducted by Enable Age, an NGO organization doing research of living conditions of senior citizens in Europe said Hungarian pensioners had increasing material problems while their health was deteriorating.
