László Szerencsi, spokesman of the Bács-Kiskun County Police would not comment the case but he has recognized the police has investigated in it since July 3, 2003. The police suspects that former department leaders and employees before retirement abused radioactive materials.
The problem started with an erroneously planned and operated cleaning tank which caused a serious breakdown, according to experts one of the gravest breakdowns in Europe. It was Zoltán Illés MP (Fidesz) who reported the case to the police. The cleaning tank worked for the 2nd block of the nuclear energy station. The ventillation system allowed a great part of the gaseous radioactive material to depart through the chimney.
Experts do not exclude even the possibility of a spontaneous chain reaction at the time of the breakdown. It also turned out that the authorities were informed about the incident much later. The International Atomic Energy Agency claimed there were serious lapses both in the station and faults on the part of the authorities.
Some leaders have been dismissed or assigned to a lower post but the chief leaders remained. The agency recommended stricter security measures but only 30 pc of the recommendations have been executed. The report of the parliamentary committee making inquiry into the case has not been accepted because the MPs of the governing parties did not appear in the last session of the body, disputing its competence.
