Sources of the aeroplane industry claim that this was not the first case of defects of the 24 powerplants used in fighters and overhauled in Russia. Some of the RD-33 type engines had been found defective by Russian experts in Kecskemét, too, that was why the originally prescribed checking after each twenty- five-hour operation was reduced to five hours. This has been announced by the Ministry of Defence but they said the cause of the restriction “probably was not due to type defect”. Experts claim there must have been faults in the technology of the constructions of the engines. Two years ago Magyar Nemzet revealed that in the transaction of the overhaul of MíG-29 fighters Armaco Ltd belonging to Péter Szalai, attached to the Hungarian Socialist Party, received an annual HUF 35 million for four years, as the contract says, ’for the use of its commercial experiences’.
Péter Szalai, managing director of Armaco Ltd has recognized the fact of signing the HUF 140 million worth contract but refuted it had anything to do with his political relations. Minister of Defence Ferenc Juhász said it was frequent that the Russian partners wanted to find agents for consultation because they were not well-versed in Hungarian economic and commmercial conditions.
